Mount Subasio frames the story of St. Francis, the spoiled son of a wealthy draper. He was a general in the army until destiny called on him to become Brother Francis, and subsequently to found the Franciscan Order. This half-day tour introduces you to the place where St. Francis was born, the streets where he walked and the grave where he rests, while the full-day tour includes three more Franciscan sites.
First stop is Assisi's crown jewel, the magnificent of Basilica of San Francesco. Two churches built on top of one another house extraordinary, medieval frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue, Pietro Lorenzetti and Simone Martini. The lower basilica is Romanesque and contains St. Francis' humble tomb, carved right into the rock of Mount Subasio, while the upper basilica is Gothic and full of light. Both were painstakingly restored after the disastrous earthquake of 1997. Francis' friend St. Clare founded the order of nuns known as 'Poor Clares' whose headquarters is the early Gothic Basilica of Santa Chiara. Her tomb is located in the crypt and the church also preserves the venerated, 12th-century crucifix that spoke to St. Francis. The Renaissance-style Chiesa Nuova is built on top of the presumed birthplace of St. Francis, while nearby Santa Maria sopra Minerva boasts a temple facade of six ancient Roman Corinthian columns.
The Romanesque Duomo of San Rufino is the town's cathedral; both it and the first century can be admired on the half-day tour. After lunch the full-day itinerary continues in San Damiano, located just outside the city walls. Here young Francis received his call from the miraculous speaking crucifix seen at Santa Chiara. The Eremo delle Carceri was once a simple cave where St. Francis came to pray. Buildings were added throughout the centuries, and the convent is still occupied by Franciscan nuns. Last stop is the immense Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. It is the beginning and end of St. Francis' earthly mission: his first church - the small stone Porziuncola chapel - and the chapel where he died in 1226.

The individual provided for my wife and I was knowledgeable, courteous and helpful in every way. My wife had a sprained ankle and the pace and sites were adjusted to compensate. I have used Select Italy's guide service before and will use it again. We continue to be satisfied with your services in every way. The guide conatcted us the day before the tour and, on the day of the tour, met us at the specified time and place. A helpful item would be a map of the meeting place because as someone not familiar to the area I am never sure I have selected the correct parking lot or location. Perhaps Select Italy could provide this as a helpful tool.
